Daniel Acosta, Jr.

Dean and Professor

Winkle College of Pharmacy, University of Cincinnati

Education: Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology

Specialties: In vitro toxicology; cardiovascular toxicology

Dr. Acosta was a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Texas at Austin for 22 years, where he helped develop a graduate training program in toxicology. Students of all levels—graduate, undergraduate, professional pharmacy students, and high school students—had the opportunity to develop careers in the biomedical sciences, as well as specific fields in toxicology. He later moved to the University of Cincinnati as Dean of the Winkle College of Pharmacy, where he helped develop the entry-level PharmD program and the graduate program in the pharmaceutical sciences, specifically in the areas of drug development and on-line cosmetic sciences. Throughout his career, his focus has been to promote toxicology as a career. Dr. Acosta became active in the Society of Toxicology (SOT) where he served on Council eventually leading SOT as President from 2000-2001. His interests in toxicology eventually led to international toxicology issues, which resulted in his recent selection as President-elect of the International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX). It would then seem only natural that his interest and impressive credentials would lead him to the Academy, first as a Fellow and now as a member of the ATS Board of Directors. Dr. Acosta is eager to serve the Academy by continuing to promote and elevate toxicology as a discipline and career choice. He considers it an honor to serve ATS and is pleased to count himself as a Fellow of an organization devoted to promoting public health through the elucidation of sound toxicological principles.
