Specialties: Biomarkers of toxicity, toxicology of metals.

Dr. Goering began his professional career with a post-doctoral fellowship at the NIEHS (1984–1986) specializing in toxicology of metals and metal defense mechanisms.  He later joined the U.S. FDA in 1986 where his research interest involved understanding mechanisms of metal toxicity, evaluating liver and kidney toxic injury, and elucidating new biomarkers of toxicity.  Dr. Goering has co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and is proud to have been named as a Diplomate of the  American Board of Toxicology in 1994 and a Fellow of Academy of Toxicological Sciences in 2006.  Peter serves as an adjunct professor in the Toxicology Program at the University of Maryland and The George Washington University’s Department of Biological Sciences.  He is proud of his service on the editorial board for Toxicological Sciences.  Dr. Goering’s service to the Society of Toxicology began in 1983 and is quite impressive.  He is an active member of the National Capital Area Chapter (NCAC-SOT) regional chapter, served on the SOT Scientific Program Committee from 1992 to 1995, in addition to serving as a Councilor from 1992 to 1994.  Peter was President of the SOT Metals Specialty Section (1999–2000); President of the National Capital Area Chapter (2000 -2001); Nominating Committee (2004–2006); Regulatory Affairs and Legislative Assistance Committee (2003–2006), chairperson from 2004–2006.
